ISO / IEC 15504 - SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination) Software is a general framework for assessing processes known as Process Improvement and Capability Level Determination.

SPICE was created within the framework of international standards. Essentially, ISO / IEC 15504 is a guide for making an assessment of software development projects. It includes a description of the evaluation process, an evaluation model, a description of the tools that can be used as part of the evaluation process, and a discussion of the factors contributing to the success of such evaluation.

The aim of this standard is to ensure that software processes are planned, used and implemented correctly, efficiently and efficiently. to be traceable and measurable throughout all stages.

ISO / IEC refers to more specific standards, but does not adjust them. The SPICE standard aims to describe the preferred sequence for implementing activities in a software development project, with particular emphasis on the management and process descriptions of a company. The ultimate goal of ISO / IEC 15504 is to provide process improvement in a technology organization based on a rigorous definition that will help achieve objectives and programs.

ISO / IEC 15504 is organized around a reference model divided into two dimensions: a) process dimension and b) capability dimension. Processes are divided into 5 categories:

  1. customer-supplier,
  2. engineering,
  3. support,
  4. management and
  5. organization.

Processes are also defined as numbered capability levels of 0 to 5, where 0 is maintained until an optimization process of level 5, such as an incomplete process, 1 performed process, and so on. The process capabilities may also include Kx-coded process attributes, where K is the capability level (1 for the executed process, 2 for the managed process, and so on), and x is a number associated with a particular relevant attribute so that 2.1 represents performance management and 2.2 represents business product management .

The ISO / IEC 1504 SPICE standard is often compared to CMMI. They carry very similar features, but also have some minor differences.
